Interview: November’s Young Creative of the Month

Every month Brave Island runs a Young Creative of the Month fund, where we spotlight a local young creative with an interview on our blog, and support them with funding of £100. For November it’s Videographer and Travel content creator Jack, also known as @jackonabudget on TikTok.

This fund launches at the beginning of every month, you can apply to be Young Creative of the Month for December here.

Please can you tell us about your creative practice?

I create travel content, I try to present the world and my experiences as authentically as possible. With no fancy editing or AI. I also try to do everything on as close to a shoestring budget, attempting to show how while exploring the world may seem a far off concept it is a lot more achievable and affordable then it at first seems.

What are your top travel recommendations for fellow Brave Islanders?

There is so much of the world out there and it is tough to suggest just a few, but if I had to… I’ll avoid the big names like Paris, Rome etc because everybody knows they’ve got to try and see them at least once but I really think some of the best places really do fly under the radar.

For lovers of natural beauty, Ohrid in North Macedonia is one of the most breathtaking places i’ve visited and the fact that the people are some of the kindest makes this one of my favorites. Art Lovers should spend a day wandering aimlessly through Freetown Christiania, a self-proclaimed independent anarchist community housed on the grounds of a former army barracks in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is one of the most vibrant and colorful places with some amazing street art. Lastly, for nerds who love architecture and really cool looking buildings Prague almost wins, but I have to give the title to the UNESCO world heritage site that is the Czech town of Kutna Hora, a rich silver mining town home to some of the grandest baroque churches and colleges, plus an equal parts beautiful and macabre ‘bone church’.

Do you have any upcoming projects or ambitions you’re particularly excited about?

Yes, a couple actually. The biggest/most ambitious is probably next March i’ll be backpacking through Baltics solo, visiting and showcasing the capitals of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia (+ hopefully Finland if all goes well.) Staying in Hostels, a converted medieval home and the obligatory Ibis Budget.

There’s so much I plan to film on this trip, so much so that there’s going to be even more I miss out on but the aspirations are to cover Tallinn’s Medieval old town, Vilnius’s Lukiškés Prison and the Baltic’s many ex-KGB buildings plus the journey and transport links between countries and a whole bunch more.

But between now and then, you can expect to see some content from Germany’s NRW region, Switzerland, Slovenia and the Croatian Capital, Zagreb.

Where can people find your work if they’d like to support you?

All my work, previous and upcoming can be found on my TikTok, @jackonabudget
