News: Top Five Opportunities in October

Each month we round up five of the most exciting opportunities currently available for young people living on the Isle of Wight, whether that’s from Brave Island or from other organisations we think you should get involved with! Check out the top picks for October below.

Mike Howley Trust – Apply for up to £1,500

Are you over 18, live on the Island and need a bit of cash to get your creative project off the ground? Whether you’re interested in dance, theatre, film/video, music or writing, you can now apply for up to £1,500 from the Mike Howley Trust. Applications are open until Friday 27th October and your project should be completed by the end of March next year. You can use the money for buying equipment, paying for training or hiring spaces. For example a previous award was given to a dancer/choreographer, who received funds for 1-to-1 specialist training.

For more information on the opportunity and how to apply, visit the Mike Howley Trust page on the Quay Arts Website or click here.

Isle of Creativity – Help shape this great new project!

Are you an Islander aged between 16-30 and interested in Carnival, outdoor and celebratory arts? Isle of Creativity is the new youth project from New Carnival and they want to hear from YOU about the kind of opportunities you want to see on the Island. There will be a FREE open day on Thursday 5th October from 4:30pm at New Carnival HQ located in The Coaching House, 13b Union Road, Ryde PO33 2ER. You can find out about what New Carnival does, hear what they hope to do with this project, and of course, very importantly there will be food available! Secure your FREE place at this taster session by sending an email to Abigail@newcarnival.co.uk and why not follow Isle of Creativity on Instagram too? So you don’t miss out on future events.

Circus opportunities with Barely Methodical Troupe!

Did you catch the fantastic ‘Bromance’ show at this year’s Ventnor Fringe Festival? Do you love circus, dance and/or acrobatics? Brave Island have teamed up with Barely Methodical Troupe to bring you not one but TWO opportunities!

The first of these is a free acrobatics workshop where you will explore a range of movement and devising techniques with the cast of their current show, KIN. Come along to meet the team and try out some new skills with some world class performers! The workshop will be in Cowes on Saturday 14th October and you can sign up here. The following week, on Saturday 21st we’ll be running a free trip to Southampton to see KIN in all it’s glory at MAST Mayflower Studios. We will be meeting at the Cowes Red Jet at 3:45pm and returning to the Island just after 8pm. If you want to join us in watching this incredible show you can sign up here.

Win £100 in Christmas Card Design Competition

Are you an aspiring artist and want to spread the word about your skills across the Island? Or do you just want to support a good cause? We’ve got the perfect opportunity for you with our Christmas Card Competition. All you need to do is design a Christmas card and you will be in with a chance to win yourself £100! The winning design will be printed and sold at various locations across the Island to raise money for Ventnor Community Foodbank. You can find out more information and apply by clicking here.

ZoieLogic’s Headfunk Event

Mental health is something that affects everyone, whether it’s ourselves or someone we know. Men’s mental health in particular has had a lot of stigma around it for a long time. Zoielogic, a dance theatre company based in Southampton aim to get as many people to experience dance as possible; to see it, be in it and help make it.

Zoielogic’s Headfunk is a annual event taking place this year on Tuesday 10th October that puts the spotlight on men’s mental health. Upon arrival you can meet a range of health organisations through activities around the MAST Mayflower Studios building, before you take your seats and witness dance performances highlighting inspiring personal journeys and community stories. You can get your tickets for Headfunk here.
