Interview: January’s Young Creative of the Month

Every month Brave Island runs a Young Creative of the Month fund, where we spotlight a local young creative with an interview on our blog, and support them with funding of £100. For January, it’s Musician Luz. This fund launches at the beginning of every month, you can apply to be Young Creative of the Month for February here.

Please can you tell us about your creative practice?
For me, music is something that I find to come naturally, and I love that it’s been that way for the most of my life. Ever since I picked up my first instrument, I was hooked, constantly driven to do anything musical given the chance, and I’m incredibly fortunate to be taking music technology and production as one of my GCSE’s.

Who or what are your biggest inspirations for your music?
Some of the largest inspirations toward my musical style have been: Type O Negative, The Beatles, Will Wood, and most importantly: Ghost. These artists have played a large part into what I make as a creative, and they will continue to influence how I play and how I make my music. My main inspiration, however, has to be Ghost B.C, with their varying styles of music, their experimental tones, and the deep, interesting story building they’ve incorporated into the band’s image and how they present themselves, they’re just an all-round enjoyable band to listen to, play, and experience, and I plan to take them with me wherever I go next.

What are your Creative ambitions for 2026?
In the coming year, I’d like to hopefully attend platform one college, and take the level 3 btec music performance course, hopefully building on my style and image as a musician, in preparation for any future bands/groups I may be a part of. This would be amazing for me to accomplish in the future; it would allow me to turn my passion into something I can do full-time, and that way I’d be able to hone my ability even further, which is a goal I would always like to strive for.

Where can people find your work if they’d like to support you?
My work can be found on bandlab @luz_the_human_10 and on Instagram @luz_the_human_music
