Since Brave Island launched four years ago, we’ve consistently heard that you want more work opportunities. Whether you’re looking to gain valuable experience for future careers, explore roles you hadn’t considered before, or find that crucial entry point into an industry you love, we’ve got an update for you!
We are very excited to announce that we have teamed up with a range of different partners to bring over 30 work experience placements to Brave Island, which will all be taking place over the next two years. These placements will fall under one of the below categories:
Heritage Work Experience Placements
These placements, which are funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, are open to those aged 16-25 or 18-25 depending on the placement. They are one day per week for 6 months, and you will be paid a stipend of £100/day from Brave Island (a form of compensation paid to individuals to help cover basic costs while receiving career training). These placements will be hosted by a variety of heritage and conservation organisations and offer roles that focus on skills such as research, environmental conservation, marketing, and events.
The first lot of these placements are now open for applications on the Brave Island website, and include a Ranger placement and a Researcher placement with the National Trust, and an Exhibition Coordinator placement with Newport Minster. These first placements run from March – September, and there will be five more to come throughout the year.
Starter Work Experience Placements
These placements, funded by The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation will be 10 days long and offer a variety of roles. This is ideal if you are just getting into the world of work, maybe you’ve finished education and you’re not sure what you want to do next, or you’re just looking to gain some experience to get started in the job market. This is a great starting point to launch your career journey, without a big commitment.
Brave Island will cover your expenses (like food and travel) at a rate of £50/day, which will mean you won’t be out of pocket from taking part. These placements will include a variety of different roles within the creative industries. For example in areas like Production, Technical, Marketing and Box Office roles at Ventnor Fringe Festival. You could learn skills like PR, customer service, or events production, which are all super useful when applying for jobs in the future or finding out what types of roles spark your interest. Starter Work Placements will take place throughout the year starting from spring 2025.
