Are you an aspiring filmmaker? Applications are now open for Picture the Music, a competition to make a music video for a song from the selection of tracks available. There are big prizes for the winning videos, with support from influential people in the film industry.
The organising team has selected 5 tracks; you just pick your favourite and create a music video for it. There’s no need to write and record dialogue, the piece can be as abstract as you like or be a more literal connection to the lyrics. This competition isn’t about having technical filmmaking knowledge, but about coming up with an original idea for a video that interprets the chosen song through film.
Don’t worry, you don’t need professional equipment to take part, your video could be filmed with any video camera or phone, you could even submit animated work. Creativity, originality and craft is what pieces will be judged on, as well as straight up entertainment value.
The winning music videos will receive ‘The Peter Cramp Awards’, to commemorate one of the founders of Ventnor Film Society. The prizes are £850 for the overall winner, and £400 for the top under 18 entry, to be spent on filming equipment. The shortlisted films will be shown at a special screening event in September, where the awards will be given.
You can enter the competition by yourself or as a team, and your music video must be submitted by Thursday 31st August. If you need any assistance or have any questions about the competition, please email megan@ventnorexchange.co.uk.
This is a collaboration between Brave Island, Ventnor Exchange, Ventnor Arts Club, and Ventnor Film Society.
Practical info: To apply, please let us know why you would like to take part, as well as which song you would like to use and we’ll email you the download link for the song. Once you have made your video, please email it to megan@ventnorexchange.co.uk by Thursday 31st August.
