Learn: ARCADE Placement

Are you looking for an opportunity to gain some work experience? Would you like to see what it’s like to try out different jobs? Brave Island is really excited to have teamed up with a range of organisations to offer placements, which are perfect if you’re looking to learn new skills and improve your CV.

This placement is hosted by renowned production company Darkfield, who create cutting edge immersive experiences inside shipping containers! You’ll be working with their team on the tech fit up and running of the show ARCADE, which takes place at this year’s Ventnor Fringe.

Darkfield transform shipping containers into realistic sets, and use binaural 360 degree sound (3D audio), complete darkness and a variety of sensory effects, to put each audience member at the centre of an intense story. It’s like a mix between a theatre show, being inside a video game, and being on a ride.

So what’s the show actually about? ARCADE is inspired by the nostalgic 8-bit aesthetic of 1980’s video games, and explores themes of free will and the evolving relationship between players and avatars. You can see the trailer for the show here:

What’s involved?

• Assist with the get in and placement of the ARCADE units
• Assist with fitting and setting up the various tech requirements for this show including sound, lighting, and 3D effects
• Support with running through and testing the show
• Assist with various other get in tasks as required
• Support Darkfield to deliver a workshop on binaural sound on Friday 18th July
• Support the technician with running the show on 18th & 19th July

You don’t require any previous experience but this role would suit you if you…

• Can communicate clearly and follow instructions
• Can work well under pressure
• Have an interest in learning about how festivals or events work
• Have an interest in art installations, immersive theatre, or gaming
• Enjoy working as part of a team

Practical info: This placement is open to those aged 18-25. It is five days long, and you will receive £50/day to cover your expenses like food and travel.
