Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a museum? We’ve teamed up with the Isle of Wight Steam Railway to provide a workshop about caring for and conserving items in the museum collection, a job that helps to keep our heritage alive.
Every item you see in a museum has been carefully looked after and cared for, in this workshop we’ll learn all about the different processes involved in this and what working in the conservation team of a museum is like. The first part of the workshop will be about how museums care for cultural artifacts, what responsibilities museums have around their collections, how they are managed and also introducing different methods of conservation. The second part will be a more hands on experience where you will get a chance to learn different conservation techniques using an object from the museum collection, including cleaning and packing for storage, ensuring these items remain in good condition for years to come.
This opportunity is great for anyone interested in a career in conservation or heritage, or if you are interested in the inner workings of museums. This will leave you with new skills that you can take to a future career or just have fun learning something new for the day!
