Every month Brave Island runs a Young Creative of the Month fund, where we spotlight a local young creative with an interview on our blog, and support them with funding of £100. For November, it’s digital artist Nathan Box. This fund launches at the beginning of every month, you can apply to be Young Creative of the Month for December here.
Please can you tell us about your creative practice?
As a hobby, I’m teaching myself to learn the ins and outs of a software called ‘Blender’. It’s a completely free 3D software used for all sorts of things – product design, animation, visual effects and so on. I’m particularly passionate about creating concept and environment art, as it allows me to delve into the intricacies of composition and photography. However, my aspirations extend beyond concept art; I am eager to explore categories like character design, animation, and above all, the world of visual effects.
Where do you find inspiration for the artwork you create?
My artwork is heavily inspired by dystopian and post-apocalyptic movies. The gritty and uncertain worlds depicted in spectacles like ‘The Maze Runner,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and others profoundly shape my artistic style. While I haven’t created a substantial number of apocalypse-themed works, I hope to make it my niche in the future.
How do you hope to use these skills in the future?
I’m developing my skills in this field to hopefully earn a place in university to study a CGI & visual effects course. I think the best part of this hobby is that I can translate these skills into a healthy and versatile career – though I am gravitating towards working in the film industry!
Where can people find your work if they’d like to support you?
You can find me at @nateultravfx on Instagram, YouTube and ArtStation, although I mostly use Instagram to share my progress and work.
