News: Future Works

Future Works is back! After the success of our pilot event in February we are super excited to announce we will be bringing you the next event at Strings Bar & Venue on Thursday 4th April! Future Works is the Island’s regular event for 16-30 year olds to meet new people, make connections, and start collaborating. The event features exciting guests from all areas of the creative industries, brought to you by Brave Island, Platform One and IW Creative Network!

Want to write a play but don’t know any actors? Want to start a band but don’t know a drummer? Maybe you want to film a showreel but don’t know a filmmaker? We’re always asked by young creatives how to get your foot in the door, get feedback on a piece of work, or just where to go to meet some new people on the Island, so here’s your chance!

At each event we’ll be joined by industry professionals to discuss different topics around starting your creative career. But don’t worry if you’re not sure what you want to do in the future, this is all about meeting new people; the bar will be open with a DJ to soundtrack the event, so come down and enjoy a different way to spend your evening!

The next edition of Future Works will be on Thursday 4th April, at 7pm at Strings Bar & Venue in Newport. Book your free ticket here: www.ticketsource.co.uk/futureworks

April Guest Speakers:

We’ll hear from Jewellery Designer & Maker Adrienne Wroath, Designer & Art Director Sean Turner and General Manager of CutLaserCut & KReative Studios Kim Purton.

We’ll learn all about how they started up and successfully run their own businesses in a panel discussion. Afterwards, you’ll get to pick up lots of information about working in the creative industries by choosing to join a conversation with one of our industry professionals. There will also be plenty of time for chatting with new people and making new connections!

Adrienne is a self-taught jewellery designer & maker and owner of ‘Adrienne Wroath Jewellery’. Her shop and studio are based in Newport where they handcraft silver and gold jewellery on-site in their workshop. She works with clients to produce bespoke pieces, jewellery repairs, remodelling and their own ‘Adrienne Wroath’ collections and online shop. Adrienne is celebrating her 10-year anniversary of the shop this month, and 15 years since she first started her company. She says, “Being a creative person with ADHD, this path I’ve forged for myself was the right one to choose, I love my work”.

Sean is a designer and art director for theatre, film and festivals world-wide. He is the associate designer for immersive theatre company LAStheatre. Recent design projects include: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Ghostbusters, The Gates of Gozer’ with Secret Cinema. He has worked as in-house designer for MAMA Festivals & Live Nation, designing stages and festival areas for Wilderness, The Great Escape, and Lovebox festivals. Sean has designed productions with Punchdrunk Enrichment and other design credits include ‘The Planets’ presented by Professor Brian Cox, streamed live on BBC Radio 3, aired on BBC 2, and performed at the Barbican. Sean is currently designing Dopamine Land, an immersive experience opening in Brisbane, Australia 2024.

Kim is the General Manager for CutLaserCut – a London design manufacturer, specialising in Laser and CNC cutting, drawing and design work, prototyping, fabrication, finishings and installation. They have been making projects for companies and individuals for over 13 years, and more recently opened KReative Studios – their IW based company. They work with many artists, designers, film companies, prop makers, architects, engineers, and retailers, taking a project from a rough sketch to completion. Kim oversees the running of the business with her partner Russ, she says “my favourite part of my job is working with artists, troubleshooting ideas and coming up with ways to help them create their ideas.”
