Each month we round up five of the most exciting opportunities currently available for young people living on the Isle of Wight, whether that’s from Brave Island or from other organisations we think you should get involved with! Check out our top picks for May below.

Free Straw Masterclass with New Carnival and Ministry of Straw
Artist Penny Maltby, from Ministry of Straw will guide you through an introduction to this endangered heritage craft. Simple headbands and crowns will be a focus, as well as items which could work well on a staff or hoop. Straw work can be extremely intricate and time consuming however this workshop will focus more on bold and quicker techniques. You will look at combining straw with other materials and fabrics in order to get the most out of this sustainable medium.
This workshop is a part of New Carnival’s two year folk based project ‘Our Folktastic Isle’ which looks into the folk history and practices of the Island.
This free masterclass takes place on Wednesday 21st May, email hannah@newcarnival.co.uk for more info.

Have Your Say on the Creative Future of The Bay Area
Do you live in The Bay Area and interested in having your say in the creative future of the place? Join Creative Island’s next Town Conversations session in Sandown. The aim is to speak about and listen to the particular challenges and opportunities that we all face, to explore collaborative opportunities, share information and network with others. The session is free to attend at Sandown Library, and provides a space for artists, creatives, culture enthusiasts and people who are simply curious, to connect, share, problem-solve, and ask: what’s next?
We think young people should definitely be part of this conversation, so to find out more and book your free space for the session on 19th May click here.
