Be a Museum Interpreter for a day! We’ve been tasked with putting together an exhibition board for Newport Minster, and we’ll need artists and designers as well as keen historians to pull together the information. The exhibition board will be used to tell the story of Newport Minster’s connections with The East India Company and be part of a future exhibition in the church for Heritage Open Days 2024.
We’ll take a quick tour around the 1000 years of history at the newly restored Minster and then focus on the buildings connections to the East India Company (an English company formed in 1600 for the exploitation of trade with Southeast Asia and India). We’ll then focus on what parts of the story we need to tell and why and how we tell that story. We’ll think about how to convey the history of the site to young people and we’ll then work together to create boards with this group in mind. This will involve research, writing, art, and design skills, all of which can be used to tell the story.
This opportunity is perfect for anyone interested in art and design and wanting to learn more about the different ways and roles in which you can use these skills, or anyone interested in history who wants to learn more about this topic.
