Each year Brave Island holds a Christmas Card Design competition in which the winner is awarded £100 and has their design sold around the Island to raise money for Ventnor Foodbank. This year’s winner is Kira Lacey. Kira’s cards are now available to buy from Ventnor Exchange!
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What do you do when you’re not making art?
Hi my name is Kira, I’m 19 years old. I’ve enjoyed doing art and creating things since I was a young child. I’ve recently left the Isle of Wight college with a BTEC in art and design. I am now doing work experience and some freelance work for New Carnival.
Your design is lovely, what inspired you to create it? Were you influenced by any particular artists or styles?
I live in East Cowes, Osborne house is my local landmark and thought it would be nice to put it on a Christmas card. I was inspired by Mike Karolos and his abstract landmarks.
Why did you decide to take part in this competition?
I decided to take part because I enjoy designing cards and working with paper making origami art.
And finally, we’d love to hear a bit about what you think of the Brave Island project.
I think The brave island project is amazing to help young people get into an artistic job. I recently went on a trip to the circus with you which was interesting and look at the website for any other trips or courses to get involved in.
