Each month we round up five of the most exciting opportunities currently available for young people living on the Isle of Wight, whether that’s from Brave Island or from other organisations we think you should get involved with! Check out our top picks for June below.

Submit work for Brave Island Zine
Submissions are open until 14th June for the third edition of the Brave Island Zine. This quarter’s theme is “Another Day in Paradise”. You can interpret this theme in any way you want, whether you really do view the Island as a paradise, or you can’t wait to get away, it’s entirely up to you how to respond! This is your canvas to share your authentic views and ideas.
The zine accepts almost anything that can fit onto a standard A5 page. You can submit photography, visual artwork, poetry, short stories, interviews, or opinion pieces. Visual art can be loosely tied to the theme, and written submissions can be up to 400 words long. Every quarterly release is celebrated with a free launch event, giving contributors a brilliant chance to see their work in print and connect with a community of peers. If you have something to say or create, don’t miss this chance to make your voice heard!

Taking place at Ingrams Yard, our workshop in Ventnor, there will be opportunities to learn skills in basic carpentry, painting and DIY techniques from workshop leaders and each other.
It’s about learning practical skills, building community, and getting connected to the incredible creative energy in the lead up to the Fringe. You’ll also be able to meet members of the Production Team and find out more about paid opportunities to get involved as crew and other production roles.

Artist Call Out for Planet Aware Exhibition
Eco community group Planet Aware are inviting artists to create thought-provoking pieces that expose the hidden story of “nurdles” the tiny, lentil-sized plastic pellets used to manufacture everyday plastic items. Because our Island sits right on major shipping lanes, these microplastics frequently wash up on our local beaches, harming marine life and absorbing nasty toxins. Planet Aware are inviting artists to bring this environmental issue to light using any creative medium you like, from painting and sculpture to photography, film, or poetry.
This is your chance to have your work displayed in a professional public exhibition at Quay Arts from September 19th to October 10th 2026, coinciding with the Great Global Nurdle Hunt. There is even a prize up for grabs for the best entry! If you’d like to use nurdles in your work, Planet Aware can supply you with them, or you can join one of their upcoming beach cleans to collect your own. To secure your spot in the exhibition, you just need to send an email expression of interest to info@planetaware.co.uk by July 20th 2026, with final artwork submissions due by August 25th.
